One Color

By James Dillet Freeman

Do you know why flamingos are so pink?

I think God made a special roseate ink

And then, exultant in transcendent might,

Poured it all forth in such profuse delight

That when he got to us he had to use

A number of much less flamboyant hues.

Whatever tint and shade God gave our skin,

He knew what counts is what we are within,

Not what we look like in our outer parts –

God made us all one color in our hearts.
