MASTER MASON

THE CRAFT AND ITS SYMBOLS

Michael H. Koplitz, PM

The Master Mason's degree is the pinnacle of your Masonic career. It is the highest degree of Freemasonry. You may hear of men becoming 33rd degree Masons. This honorary degree does not mean that this individual is "higher" or "better" than you are as a Master Mason. What is indicates is that man continued on with his Masonic Profession to gain more light. Light (knowledge) is measured by degrees. The more degrees you have the more light you have had placed upon yourself. The Masonic Education committee will not steer you in any direction with respect to other Masonic bodies that you can now join. We will inform you as best we can about each body so that you can decide which is best.

The search for true Masonic Light should not end with your receiving the Master Mason's degree. After you receive your dues and proficiency cards you can petition any Masonic order. In addition, you can (and are encouraged) attend the 42nd Masonic District School of Instruction. The school meets every second Monday and Last Thursday of every month in the Blue Room. Here you can learn the degree work even further.

The working tools of a Master Mason are all the tools of Freemasonry. You should make it an important part of your learning about the Craft to learn about every Masonic working tool. The degree work does not touch upon all the working tools. The picture above depicts many of different working tools. In addition, Masonry is full of allegories which use symbolism to inform us of Masonic values.

The beehive is an example of a Masonic symbol not found in our ritual. The beehive is a symbol of industry and hard work. The honeycombs of the beehive tell us about the value of teamwork and of individual satisfaction. The bees build the honeycomb together in the same manner that each of us builds our life to God's satisfaction.

The portals are now completely open for you to experience and learn about Freemasonry.
